So, today I went to MoMA for the first time since elementary school. Going into it, I was very skeptical...I’m very much a form over function guy, so three blank white canvases with neon color borders dosen’t do it for me. Not only that, stuff like that actually fills me with uncontrollable range....plus, why do people think a collage of campbell soup cans is a work of genius?!?
But I did have a slight epiphany.
Perhaps some artists don’t really think a white canvas is worthy of millions. Maybe they are true masters at trolling the hell out of us/”the establishment”/whatever. Maybe what people pay millions for shouldn’t be taken seriously.
Which is why other than the most beautiful Jag E type I’ve ever been lucky enough to lay my eyes on, a literal can of shit was my favorite piece in the museum.
I’m used to liking shit cans that have 4 wheels...who woulda figured you can actually condense it.
Oh, and the can o shit and the Jag are pretty similar in price...
And getting a text saying “meet us at the can of shit” tops anything I’ve ever read.

Technically art is something created by manipulating it to elicit some kind of reaction. So I would say you have had a reaction.

Art is any work which has a meaning which is deeper than that which is blatant/superficial.
It’s why a lot of paintings/photos/whatever aren’t art, but a rock with googly eyes might be.

I think that is the key - not all art will be pleasing to all eyes. Pick what is a positive experience. We were at SAM last year when they had their Impressionism exhibit, (honestly, usually not my cup of tea,) but there was a Monet landscape that mirrored what I like to do with photography so much so, (lighting, placement, scope, scale, shadow, etc), I couldn’t believe it. My wife actually pointed it out initially - “hey, that looks like one of your pics.” That Monet dude clearly had something similar going through his brain 150 years ago very similar to what I do.

Art is without function. If something has a function, the shape, colour and general esthetics are ‘design’, not ‘art’. That is why a car isn’t art. Neither is architecture. You can appreciate design in a lot of the same ways you can appreciate art. But it’s an important distinction.

I can’t define art, but I know it when I see it. And an upside-down airplane urinal with scribbles on it does not art make. Also the Jag E-Type is not the most beautiful car ever made. In fact I probably wouldn’t even put it in my top 10. *Barricades doors, pumps shotgun*

“Maybe they are true masters at trolling the hell out of us”
This is the correct answer! See the documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop” for further evidence/clarification.
